Hong Kong’s year-round international trade events, organized by Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), have established a go to platform for buyers and suppliers around the world to engage and develop business activities. These fairs are a big platform to expand Bangladeshi business, especially for SMEs, in Hong Kong and worldwide. In April, a Bangladesh pavilion is going to be formed in the HKTDC Hong Kong House wear Fair with the support from the Export Promotion Bureau of Bangladesh (EPB), featuring 21exhibitors. Johnny Wan, Director of Exhibition Marketing Department (DEMD) of HKTDC shown up the enormous and diverse opportunities awaiting Bangladeshi enterprises at HKTDC trade fairs at a press briefing in Dhaka on 15 March 2017.
“Earlier in 2016, the HKTDC and the EPB of Bangladesh have already signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to pursue a strong, effective and mutually beneficial partnership. It will not only create more business opportunities between the two regions, but also cement our collaborative efforts to promote bilateral trade,” Said Johnny Wan.
Johnny Wan also said, Bangladeshi corporations, especially SMEs, are encouraged to capitalize on the exhibiting and sourcing opportunities from the year-round HKTDC fairs, particularly in sectors such as house wears, home textiles, garments, food, tea, as well as information and communications technology (ICT). Figures revealed that some of the HKTDC fairs have been particularly well received among Bangladeshi companies.
Mr. Wan further cited that in 2016, the total trade value between Bangladesh and Hong Kong amounted to nearly US$ 1.7 billion, where major trade commodities between the two regions include telecommunications equipment and parts, leather, various kinds of fabrics as well as other articles of apparel.
“The HKTDC has been eyeing opportunities in emerging markets. As a manufacturing powerhouse in South Asia with a rapidly expanding economy, and an important partner on the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar (BCIM) Economic Corridor under the Chinese mainland’s Belt and Rod Initiative, Bangladesh has been identified as market with great potential for uncovering more bilateral opportunities,” he explained.
Leveraging on Hong Kong’s intrinsic geographic and economic advantages, Bangladeshi companies can expand their businesses into the Chinese mainland and the world using the value-adding gateway, with the HKTDC trade fairs serving as the prime facilitator to boost business opportunities and forge stronger trade between the two regions, he added
He mentioned that among the strong portfolio of more than 30 international exhibitions the HKTDC organizes in Hong Kong annually, 11 form the largest marketplaces of their kind in Asia, with jewelry, gifts, watches and clocks, electronics and lighting being the largest of their kind in the world.
In 2016, fairs attracted more than 36,000 exhibitors and over 711,000 buyers from across the globe, affirming the city’s reputation as Asia’s trade fair capital, he added.
HKTDC, established in 1966, is a statutory body dedicated to creating opportunities for Hong Kong’s businesses. With more than 40 offices globally, including 13 on the Chinese mainland, the HKTDC promotes Hong Kong as a platform for doing business with China, Asia and the world.
